If there was anything Ron had over his best friend, it was his knack for strategy in a game of wizard's chess. In all honesty, Ron had only exerted himself with the game because he enjoyed beating Percy; but in his first year it had also proven useful in their pursuit of the philosopher's stone. He hadn't noticed Hermione's departure of their compartment. He was that focused on the game at hand that anything could have happened: Draco Malfoy could have bombarded their play to antagonise them for all he cared, the board was his board and he was a master when it came to wizard's chess.
Even the lights flickering were a fleeting annoyance.
But it was the absolute darkness that had terror griping through his stomach. Their surroundings became a mass of confusion. Suddenly the air felt like a ice-sharp spike to the centre of the chest, and as he uttered a frail whimper... some creature of a towering mass entered their compartment and stole away every positive feeling he'd once had about succeeding in the chess game. Every thought he had of himself turned to a negative. He was convinced that he was no good, that he was a damned fool to think he could compare to anyone else - and there were these little, nasty images of memories he thought he'd long forgotten.
Then something bright permeated his self-doubt. The ugly, robed thing was warded away and the sounds, sights and smells of the train became more pungent. He looked across at Harry, who looked as though he might be having some kind of seizure. Worryingly he opened his mouth to try and say something, but his energy had been sapped. The only thing he could comprehend was some battered-robed, worn-looking bloke handing him a piece of chocolate and a mass of brown curls fluttering about the place. This must have been Hermione.
"Uh, 'mione?" He managed to utter, thickly. "What... Harry? Wha'sappened?"
He stared blankly at the chocolate in his hands. His instinct - or only thought at this point - was to eat it. Suddenly a warmth spread through his fingers and his brain became less foggy. He watched the battered bloke and Hermione help Harry sit up, and made a movement to help them, but it seemed they were managing the situation. He sat back down, and breathed out steadily.
"That was..." He started shakily, gazing between all of them. "Dad mentioned them once. Dementors. That was a Dementor... but why?" He sounded quite frightened at the idea. "D'you think he's going to be okay?" He asked Hermione, looking at Harry fretfully. Then, as if feeling the air change, he slowly looked to the older guy. Who was this bloke? He blinked at him, feeling a little awkward by his presence.

h no! Were people still in trouble? If this was Sirius Black, even if the kid said he wasn’t because that was exactly what Sirius Black would say, then it would be safer away from him. His little girlfriend was probably… Hm. Well maybe she was brainwashed. Or she was tricked! Ravenclaws thought they were so smart, he bet that she was tricked because of that arrogance. He saw the older guy running away with the Gryffindor. That was probably where the people who were in trouble could be found… but if he caught Sirius Black… Root had to pick between two hard choices…
“Well according to my dad the ministry controls the dementors so… no they wouldn’t just attack people randomly or you’re saying he’s wrong!” His dad was a dumbass. He was wrong in some respects, such as dementors wouldn’t attack randomly if they weren’t escorted by some ministry personnel but it didn’t matter. Root thought he was right and therefore, this must be Sirius Black if he was really that worried about getting his soul sucked out…
However… He looked down the aisle and just bolt on after Remus and Hermione attempting to find where they had gone. Honestly, given the two ways one could go and him seeing which of the two made it easy to find them albeit he was a bit late to the party, so he didn’t see the dementor, just the passed-out Gryffindor boy and the two other gryffindors with the older guy. Root peeked in and gave a small wave. Hello, fourth year Hufflepuff standing here. He was sad he couldn’t help.
“Is everything alright now?” Root tilted his head looking between the three students, one of which he recognized as Harry Potter, and the other two his friends that seemed to earn a lot of points at the end of his second year. It was fine though, at least it wasn’t Slytherin who won again.

She still had her eyes closed and was leaning heavily. Dammit! Just go away already! The stupid thing is long gone! She hated looking weak, but those damn things seem to feed faster and in larger doses when one has a lot of dark thoughts on their mind. She had to think quickly to shake this off, she needed to go check the train and she was sure the spell was wearing off. There was only one thing she could think of even just the thought of it flushed her pale cheeks. She heaved a great sigh, suddenly touching Willow's cheeks and pressed a kiss to his lips, effectively stealing a heated kiss. It only took a few moments, but the warmth that ran through her was instant. She pulled away gently and sighed softly, grinning.
"Let's go check on the others." And before my brother comes back.
"Yeah. He is wrong. Father's can be wrong. My dad's been wrong about the World Cup winner every year since 1985 and he still bets. Get a grip." Willow snarked, though that Hufflepuff boy bolted off so fast he probably hadn't heard him.
Then Willow once again turned red as a tomato. Rose had kissed him on the lips and he was still not used to that. Though he was hoping someday he could get used to it. He nodded.
"Y-yeah. L-let's go." Willow said, with more than enough happy memories to keep the dementors at bay. He beckoned Rose to follow as he pressed on. Making it to a compartment with some familiar looking faces. The third-year Weasley, Hermione and Potter who was slumped unconscious. As well as the older guy who had given them chocolate.
God damn this was an eventful day.
"Is Potter going to be alright?" He asked. It wouldn't do for him to die now. That would be horrible. And Potter played a part in his plans. All and all it would be a waste, both of a human life and a perfectly good plot.
He was surrounded by a bunch of scared kids, of which he understood why they were afraid, but half of them had no idea who he was and why he was on the train – at least he didn’t look anything like Sirius Black or there could be a misunderstanding. Regardless he looked at the two Gryffindor for a moment and nodded his head though before he could speak, both Root and Willow had arrived, presumably followed by Rose. Well it was better to explain these things to a few people than just a couple, he supposed, as it all regarded them as well.
The air was starting to heat up again signaling the dementors were gone and the train soon started to move again. He saw the trolley lady running by to check on everyone, but when she saw him with the group of students, she nodded and continued on. Well, at least he knew that the others were being taken care of as well (the trolley lady seemed to have a lot of chocolate on her so that was nice).
“Harry should be fine,” Remus said so all of them could hear him, “But you’re right…Ronald Weasley, is it?” The hair, and the fact Remus knew the Weasleys from the last war, and thus knew which one would be Harry’s age lead him to be able to come to this conclusion. “That was a dementor, likely searching the train to see if Sirius Black was aboard.” He took in a deep breath and then looked from Ron to Hermione and then to the passed out Harry.
[Harry POV Starts here!]
As his eyes fluttered open, he was met with the faces of his friends and an older man – along with a couple others he hadn’t really known prior to this. A Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. Huh. His head was hurting, and he felt sick almost, and worried. He just remembered the hooded figure and then the scream and… then he woke up now. The older man offered him a large piece of chocolate and beckoned him to eat it and so he did while the man began to speak and over an explanation.
[Back to Remus POV!] “My name is Remus Lupin. I’m taking the Defense Against the Dark Arts position this year.” With the introduction out of the way, he figured it was best to explain why Harry was attacked – and probably a few other students on the train. But he was one person, he couldn’t help every single student, and so the trolley lady helping out was a relief. There were also a few conductors that were going by and helping out people who too saw him with these students and left them to him.
“That was a dementor, Harry, the guards of Azkaban,” Quick explanation for the boy who was passed out, “The dementors do not normally just attack anything they see – they are under Ministry control. However, there are some people, like young Harry here, who have true horrors in their past and the dementors could not simply resist.” He sighs looking between the students again. “It’s nothing to worry about now, it’s over.”

Hermione was about to answer Ron when Remus jumped in with a description of what the dementor was and why it was there. Sirius Black? On the train? Very unlikely but not completely improbable, and though the convict was obviously in this very compartment, Hermione couldn’t help but to cast a wary glance around her anyway. It was then that she realized there were other students here. Turning to the other student who asked if ‘Potter was okay,’ Hermione said, “Harry is fine. You all can go.”
Her words were polite though abrupt and firm for Hermione did not think Harry needed an audience right now. Harry, to her, did not look fine. “Eat that, Harry, it helps. Prof. Lupin gave me some to.” she said pointlessly as Harry and Ron were both already eating their chocolate. “What happened, Ron? Did the dementor… did it… did it touch Harry or do something to him?” she muttered quietly to Ron who also appeared shaken but not nearly as bad as Harry. Harry had been unconscious! She knew the dementor had not kissed him but was there something else it could have done?
Wait… Had Lupin said the dementors were under Ministry control? Yes, that was correct. Hermione had read that somewhere before, but apparently their control was not that solid or safe if the dementors had attacked Harry. As she considered the situation, Hermione was still confused about one part and turned to Lupin. “Sir, why would the Ministry think Sirius Black would be on the train?” she asked.

Part of her wanted to heave the Hufflepuff and Willow by the collars and out of the small hall because really, it was getting quite cramped in here. People were also starting to stare, for that matter. Rose looked around and sighed. Hermione Granger was asking way too many questions. "Dementor, class five being, their presence can suck the joy and happiness out of a person... but their kiss will indeed leave you an empty shell. There hasn't been any record of them killing anyone though - but, I mean, being an empty shell is pretty much the same anyway."
As she explained, she found herself twining her fingers with Willows, suppressing a shudder as she rolled her eyes. "Haven't you read the news? Last time he was seen at Azkaban, he was muttering 'He's at Hogwarts, He's at Hogwarts'; it was obvious he was referring to Harry."
She informed them of this dryly adding a roll of her eyes. She thought it was bullshit of course, but the truth was so deeply hidden, she just didn't know what was fact or fiction.
True horrors? Yes, true horrors indeed. The Wizarding world had just gotten out of a war and yet the ministry sent in beings that preyed on psychological damage? Madness. Madness and stupidity. The Ministry seemed to hold those two values more sacred than any other. If Willow was running things, it would be different. Hell, if a sane, competent person was running things it would be different. Willow didn't want the job though. He was a bit busy and he wasn't interested in a leadership position. Also he was 13.
Willow rejoiced at being able to hold hands with Rose. To him it was somehow more intimate than the kisses. He tried to keep his composure and force down the blush, to mixed results.
"I-I'm glad Potter is going to be alright. My house often has an....unfair attitude towards Gryffindor's, especially you three. House rivalry aside I have nothing against the lion's house or most of its students. If you three ever need any help with Slytherin bullies or say, Potions or Defense against the Dark Arts, feel free to come talk with me. My name is Willow. Willow Fey, third year Slytherin." Willow said. It was a bit bold but he felt the need to make some kind of move.
"Indeed Harry is a likely target. The three of you will need to be extra careful this year. And of course double for Potter. Good luck to you." He said. With that, he felt the need to beat a retreat.
"I think it would be best for us to take our leave. R-Rose?" Willow said, giving her a sidelong glance, as if to say "Should we head on out?"
Remus looked to Rose who was showing off her Ravenclaw, but he didn’t linger too long on her, as he knew she was angry at him and he’d rather not do something that would make things worse. So instead he decided to do nothing! Though he did notice the hand holding…
“Well, someone at Hogwarts – though unfortunately it is likely it is Harry he’s after.” Something flashed behind Remus’s eyes, just for a split second – pain, agony, loss, betrayal. All of those things at once. Why would Sirius be going after Harry? Didn’t he have enough betrayal as it was? James wasn’t enough Potter for him, was he? However, after that split second it was gone completely, and his smile returned, a reassuring smile.
[Harry’s POV starts here!]
Sirius Black? He thought back to what Mr. Weasley had said. Harry looked between Lupin and Hermione, and then at the two others – there was that Ravenclaw 16-year-old in their year and a Slytherin he remembered seeing around. He didn’t really talk much to him, but at least from how he was acting, he didn’t seem as much of a prat as Malfoy. Even still, he wasn’t quite sure what to think of all of this.
“So they thought… Black was here, looking for me?” That was wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. The guardians sent here to capture a killer who was after him instead attacked him and could leave him an empty shell. That sounded so fantastic. Whose clever idea was that? It was a good thing the professor was here – though it was strange a professor was riding the bus…
Harry looked towards the Slytherin boy and had a mixture of feelings – distrust because of Malfoy and every other Slytherin he had met not being kind in the slightest, but he seemed at least a little bit genuine? Harry was hoping it wasn’t a trick. “I think I’ve seen you around in classes, Willow.” Harry gives him a nod, though he can’t really get himself to smile after that whole attack. “Did someone scream?” Harry looks between the group.
[Remus’s POV starts here!]
Remus looked at Harry and shook his head. “What you likely heard was a memory.” Screaming that Harry wouldn’t be able to pinpoint? Remus didn’t want to think about it. It couldn’t have been… her. Remus quickly glanced down the aisles of the train. “I should check on the others.” Remus looked at the chocolate in Harry’s hands still. “Eat it. I’ll see you at Hogwarts.” He smiled at him and quickly ran off into the night.
[Harry’s POV starts here]
“You be careful too Willow. A Slytherin offering to help a Gryffindor won’t earn you any favors from your fellow housemates…” Unless it was a trick. Harry was still a little worried about that. Harry took a nibble out of the chocolate and it actually did help, he felt a little better almost instantly.
[At this point, make your exits, do your last few things if you want, but otherwise the event is basically over! Yay!]

Rose watched as Remus fled the compartment and sighed, shaking her head. Honestly, she wasn't sure what Dumbledore was thinking of inviting him here to teach. Sirius Black on the loose? Harry Potter being here. Her being here? Wasn't it all a bit too much to pile on the introvert werewolf at one time?
She looked to Harry a wry smile on her lips, "maybe. Maybe not. Personally, I'm on the maybe not side. I have a hunch, but I can't really explore it. Don't have enough details."
This was contradicting Willow, but she sad it anyway.
She looked at the chocolate still in Harry's hand, echoing Remus; "Eat it, it'll help."
She gave him a brighter smile, before turning to Willow, "yeah, let us get out of here and leave Potter to his friends. They can handle him just as well."
That said, she led Willow back out into the train corridor to return to a compartment to settle in for the rest of the ride to school....
