ne might ask: what is wrong with Alexander Root? Why is he constantly injured, refuses to go to the nurse, and insists that he just fell most of the time, despite the injuries not showing any signs of it being accidental? Well that was pretty simple, but most people wouldn’t know, so he just continued on like that.
However, today was completely his fault. He had accidentally burned himself pretty badly along his leg while he was practicing some spells he had come up with. He had made sure to practice away from people – he took up a classroom that was empty at the time, and well, before he limped his way to the hospital wing he made sure everything was repaired before he left it. After all, if he didn’t, then people would know he was in there and what he was practicing and ha, as if he would let people know he was inventing spells! Then again, this burn was bad, it really hurt, and it was starting to blister. While normally he would be dragged to the hospital wing, he usually wasn’t in this much pain and at least to him broken bones were nothing, bruises, sprains, the whole lot.
When he limped into the hospital wing, Madame Pomfrey gave him a stern look, and started to reprimand him. ‘How many times do I have to tell you to be more careful!’ It was fairly obvious by the way she would say that that she knew that it was a lie, but Root thought he was so clever and had fooled her. However, she did look at him with a curious look and then back at his leg.
She asked how he hurt himself this time and Root gave a grandiose tale about a dragon attacking him while inside the building! He managed to slay the beast but his body disappeared so there was nothing to recover. But the burn was the proof of what happened. The way he told it as well, you could tell he was lying, and was having a bit too much fun coming up with the story, adding a few details here and there. Despite the pain healing spells tended to have immediately, he seemed to smile through it, despite having a pained look behind the smile.
Magic was wonderful, but it had its limitations. The burn had gotten too bad to heal with one spell and he was going to have to spend the night here. That normally didn’t happen, but he supposed it was the dangerous spell he was practicing. He called it ‘The Dancing Flames’, because well, flames and dancing. He laid back and sighed, writing in his journal the result of what happened today. He planned to do it again tomorrow but be much more careful. Will he ever learn?

Cedric sighed, outside the hospital wing. Again? This guy couldn't stop getting himself into trouble. As newly appointed Prefect it was his responsibility to make sure Hufflepuff students didn't self-destruct. In most cases, this was an easy job. Hufflepuffs, don't usually get into to much trouble. This Root kid was a whole other story. Cedric confidently strode through the door, to see the boy writing in a journal. That's right, he did keep a journal around all the time, didn't he?
"Alexander Root, I presume?" Cedric said, giving him an easygoing smile. He didn't want to give the guy a hard time. He just had to convince him to stop getting himself into so much trouble.

oot looked up when the older boy walked in and he tilted his head. That was Cedric Diggory, the seeker, the prefect. He was the golden boy of the yellow house. Heh. Heh. It was hilarious right? He thought so and was laughing on the inside. Holding up a finger, he looked back down at his journal and kept writing for a few moments of silence, letting the golden boy wait for a second until the great Alexander Root had the time to speak to him. Ha. That’s right Cedric, Root was important too!
He put his finger down and looked back at Cedric closing his journal. “Well, either you’ve been listening to some lies or you just are mistaken slightly. My name is Root. Nothing else. Nothing more.” Despite the almost depressing words, which was weighing on his heart, he was smiling. It was more of a fake smile than anything. Madame Pomfrey was keeping him the night and while there wasn’t much pain anymore, she wanted to make sure things didn’t get worse. “Is something wrong, Cedric?”
Go him. Using someone’s name who he hadn’t really met before. Wasn’t that just a show of how great he was? Wait, why was he trying to impress him? He was just a Hufflepuff like everyone else and while a star of the puffs, he was nothing compared to the famous Harry Potter, or even that third year bully, Draco Malfoy. His name wasn’t known through the school by most people. Which was unfortunate for the puffs, but that was okay, Root would make them famous and the most important and best house for everyone!

This kid sure was something. Holding a finger up to keep him waiting. Cedric felt himself grin a bit. It was amusing, this younger boy acting so important.
"Ok, Just Root. You've been getting yourself into a lot of mischief lately. Making a name for yourself in the hospital wing. What are we going to do about that?" Cedric said. a playful smile still on his lips.
"Don't worry. You're not in too much trouble, yet. But you shouldn't push your luck. You wouldn't want to damage yourself permanently or get Hufflepuff in a bind right?" Cedric concluded. This was a good enough opening argument, he thought.

ey, he said his name right! Good for him, else Root might get a little bit annoyed with him like he did anyone else who used the name ‘Alexander’ for him. He had his reasons for not wanting to be called that name, and none of the reasons were really all that good – mostly they had to do with him hating himself. That was such a cheery thought, right? Regardless, Root was smiling because the older guy had respected him and used the name he wanted him to use.
“Well, we aren’t going to do anything about it. I’ll deal with my business and you deal with your business. My work is very important and I’m not going to let a little injury stop me.” He points to his leg that Madame Pomfrey had healed at least mostly. He was going to scar definitely but at least it wouldn’t disable him permanently.
“I won’t be getting Hufflepuff into any danger, that’s why I do it alone. When I’m done, Hufflepuff will be famous. Doing nothing and just being fine with how things are now won’t do anything for our house. Are you really fine with people teasing us because of our house? Calling us dumb because we’re in Hufflepuff? Or weak. Or cowardly. Just because we aren’t in the other houses doesn’t mean we aren’t worth anyone’s time! That’s why I’m going to be rich and famous and I won’t stop until I reach that goal!”

Cedric had to laugh. What could he do? The kid had spunk, he'd give him that.
"Look I understand you might not want to listen to me. I'm the prefect. Cedric Diggory, the golden boy of Hufflepuff, right? I admire your ambition. I really do. It's not wrong to want to excel. But you shouldn't be trying such dangerous things so early. Wait a few years, til your a 5th or 6th year. Then you can give some of these more risky spells a try." Cedric said. This was a bit hypocritical of course. He had tried his fair share of risky transfigurations and had pulled some stunts in Quidditch that were inadvisable. However, he probably shouldn't have done that and he wanted to pass that down to the students he was supposed to help. That's what being a prefect meant.
But even so he just couldn't help but add:
"Listen, if you want to try something riskier...I understand. But come to me first ok. Maybe...just maybe, I can supervise." Cedric said, whispering conspiratorialy.

hen he leaned in to whisper to him, something seemed to be very odd to Alexander Root. His heart was pumping just a little bit faster as if he was nervous and his stomach felt like he was about to throw up, but he didn’t. What was wrong with him? However, when he heard the words whispered, the feeling receded and was replaced by something else.
Did he. Did he just call himself the golden boy of Hufflepuff? Okay, yes that was what he was considered by most Hufflepuffs, but even still! Root didn’t want to be outshone by this guy! So what if he was a fourth year? What difference did it make? He was still better than some upperclassman! Why couldn’t he do this stuff and they could when they were dumb and boring.
Root looked at him with an angry look and crossed his arms. He wanted to watch him too? How dare he do that! He was a Hufflepuff! He wasn’t a Slytherin! Root’s nose flared up slightly and he just shook his head. “I’m not going to let you steal my secrets. I won’t let you take my fame. I’ll be the golden boy, I promise you that.” His hands shake slightly at his side and he looks down, the anger replaced with sadness. He knew he had to prove to everyone he was worth something. Otherwise… otherwise how could his father ever think anything of him? His father had been a Gryffindor and he had heard all sorts of terrible things after he was sorted about him being a Hufflepuff. Instead of being depressed about it, he set out to do something about it. So, his father wouldn’t think so little of him.
“I’ll be the one all the girls like. I’ll be the one everyone looks at and thinks ‘that’s who I want to be’. I’ll be the one who is super cool, and everyone likes. I won’t let you take that from me. You’re supposed to be the best Hufflepuff. Why are you even suggesting that?”

Root's reaction seemed highly strange and volatile. At first he seemed a bit nervous. Almost like Cho did whenever he talked to her. He couldn't be...? No, not that anything was wrong with that. It just seemed a bit arrogant for Cedric to just assume he was into him.
"Secrets? Fame? I have no interest in that. I personally think people overhype me a bit. I wasn't being that serious about it." Cedric said.
"I'm sure you will get everything you want in the end, ok? You seem incredibly smart. I just don't want you to push yourself too hard. People burn themselves out that way." Cedric said. He felt hypocritical considering all he strived to do. But he didn't feel as desperate as Root seemed to. That sort of desperation felt dangerous.

he fact Cedric was a Hufflepuff made Root feel at least a bit more at ease. He wouldn’t have told him his goals if he wasn’t a fellow Hufflepuff. There were certain qualities for each house, and Root really did like Hufflepuff – his mother probably would’ve been a Hufflepuff if she weren’t a muggle. Root looked to the side and fold his arms tightly around his chest. It was true, he had gotten himself hurt quite a bit, and he had avoided the spells he invented that could prove to be deadly if not used very carefully. It was just that all spells were dangerous if used incorrectly and Root knew that. In a way, he thought, he was trying to get hurt – to get attention from those around him. He didn’t want to fade into the background.
“I – well you’re wrong about that. You are… amazing. You’re the seeker and a prefect and you get all the pretty girls liking you because you’re good looking and nice and charming and very cute –“ He paused and his eyes widened. His face turned a bright shade of red, almost looking like he had burnt his whole face as well. “I – I – I mean in a c-c-c-completely n-not gay way. I-I’m not, y-you know, but its okay if y-y-you like guys I – I just don’t at – at all.” That was such a great denial. Good job Root you convinced him you were definitely not gay by calling him nice and charming and good looking and cute of all things.
“I just… I want to… my father was angry when I was sorted into Hufflepuff and… he said I was worth nothing like everyone else in Hufflepuff. I… I want to prove him wrong. I want him to accept me. I’ll… let you watch when I… do stuff if you… teach me how to be cool like you.”

Cedric found it odd to be so blatantly flirted with by a boy. Or at least be so obviously in the presence of a boy with a crush on him. Not bad odd or good odd, just strange odd. Honestly, he had never really thought about such a thing. Homosexuality that is. Other then that there was nothing wrong with it, but he had never even thought about being with another guy. He just figured he liked girls so how gay could he possibly be? Maybe he should give it more of a think later.
"No..there isn't anything wrong about being gay." Cedric said, giving the boy a relevant look. It seems he hadn't quite reconciled with it. Then Root had given his speech about wanting him to teach him how to be cool. The smart idea was to politely decline. He already had a lot of things on this plate and taking on a younger boy as an apprentice for a topic he didn't know how to teach seemed ill-advised. However, Root was obviously distressed and he could maybe help the kid.
The fact that there was something faintly exciting about acting as a mentor to someone who had a crush on him, even if that someone was a boy, was something he tried to ignore.
"Ok. I'll do my best to help you out. It's a deal." Cedric said, and wondered if he had really made the right choice.

h no. Cedric thought – oh no. Root was clenching his fists. He wasn’t – there was no way. If his father found out what Cedric thought about him he couldn’t imagine the sort of treatment that would come from him. He couldn’t imagine how much he would be laughed at and told how he was so right about his son not only being a failure but also queer. That wasn’t right. Cedric was so, so wrong on so many levels. He only liked girls and not handsome men who were older than hi – bad Root. Not handsome. Bad word. Bad word. Physically attractive to females and not him. That was much better if not convoluted.
“I – I’m not gay.” Root insisted. If the rumor went around he was into guys, then everyone would tease him for it as well – or so he believed given how badly his father tended to talk about people who liked those of the same gender. Plus, some kids around the neighborhood liked to tease him about that sort of stuff as well during the summer. He just tried to ignore them as much as possible… but there was something odd about how he looked at Cedric compared to everyone else around him… He couldn’t be gay, he liked girls! He liked, uh… who was a cute girl? He couldn’t think of any. There was that girl from the train that was okay, and he appreciated her looks! There. He found one. Phew…
“… just don’t tell anyone the stuff I’m working on… it’s dangerous if others try to do stuff I’m working on and they don’t know what they’re doing. I –“ He looks off to the side as if he was looking for people who were spying on them. He leaned to Cedric’s ear and whispered to him. “I’m trying to invent some very special spells.”
Post by Cedric Diggory on Jul 13, 2018 10:25:46 GMT
Cedric was bright enough to tell that this was a sore topic for him. He didn't quite understand why. Perhaps it was difficult for him at home? Cedric couldn't conceive of that. If he were ever to come out as gay, his parents might have to adjust, even cry for him or something equally embarrassing. But then his mother would say, "As long as you're happy." and his father would say, " You'll be the best darn gay wizard of all time!" and things would go mostly back to normal. He knew some kids had rougher circumstances, but he had a hard time relating.
"That's fine...either way." Cedric said, his awkwardness around such delicate issues coming out.
Then the kid whispered in his ear and that felt a little...strange. He actually felt a bit excited. Not the exact same feeling as with a pretty girl but...close.
"Special spells huh?" He said, mimicking his hushed tone.
"I'll be very careful not to tell anyone." Cedric said, as he withdrew a bit.
"If there is nothing else at the moment, I should probably return to prefect duties." Cedric said, he said giving Root a friendly smile. Cedric had...a lot to think about.
Post by Alexander Root on Jul 18, 2018 20:43:38 GMT
At least the subject was mostly dropped, though Root was afraid he wasn’t convinced. It was going to be okay, Alexander, you just had to prove to him you were the straightest wizard out there! Though he wasn’t quite sure how to prove that. Maybe he had to find a girlfriend or something? But that was so much work he rather not. Maybe prove it through your magic! After all, if Cedric trusted that he knew himself and therefore was able to produce good magic, then he would believe that he knew himself and that his words were not a lie! Convoluted, Root, calm down.
“… I’ll… see you around then.” Root swallowed looking away. “And I’ll be watching you! A good Hufflepuff is true to their word! So I’ll hold you to it!”
