Remus had finally gotten to really look at his office since he got here. Of course, class had started off on a good foot the first couple of days. His office was already set up with most of his stuff, but then again, he didn’t really have much stuff to begin with. In the corner of his office there was a Grindylow in a tank, and books in the bookcase full of information on creatures and spells. And in the corner a cabinet with a boggart in it. It rattled slightly, and Remus chuckled taking a seat at his desk and looking around the office, finally relaxing slightly.
This was a dream come true. Working at Hogwarts. A teacher. He was able to share his knowledge with others. Make them smile and like going to school and learning all of this information. It was something he had longed to do since before his attack, but that all seemed like a pipe dream after he was transformed not long after his fifth birthday. All of his hopes and dreams had been crushed and he didn’t allow himself to dream. Just because he didn’t let himself didn’t mean he didn’t when he forgot he couldn’t let himself dream.
He needed to make sure he didn’t screw this chance up. Not only he was a professor but he had the potion he needed to keep himself safe during the full moon, whereas just last month during his transformation he had ended up hurting himself fairly badly due to the lack of potion and locking himself up. He had a few new scars on his chest from that. Not that he wasn’t used to it, but it still hurt and constantly reminded him of what he was and how wounds inflicted by people like him wouldn’t heal as well, nor fully heal ever, as other wounds.
Remus flicked his wand and a book glided to his hands. It wasn’t anything serious like studying up for his next lesson – he had that already decided. It was just a book for enjoyment. Something he hadn’t read in a long time, a classic. He thumbed through the pages and started reading, a grin on his face, ready in case a student came in asking questions or anything else.

never asked for no one's philosophy; it's obvious i'm proud of me
After breakfast and shaking off the two former classmates, Tonks began her patrols of the school, deciding to start with the dungeons because she honestly did not want to spend any time near Snape whatsoever. Most of the classrooms were locked, thankfully, so there was no way he could be in there; that stupid cousin of hers. She sighed as she continued to walk, eyes moving left and right, check each door, and poking her head into any door that was open, shining Lumos into any of the darker rooms. Rooms that were open, she had to do full inspections of. Under the desks, in the cabinets. She knew her cousin was an animagus, and he would probably be able to hide in the lower cabinets if he wanted.
Farther down, she came across the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, whose door was not only unlocked but wide open. She sighed, wondering if whoever who had taken over the position this year was really that stupid. Entering the classroom, she sighed further when the back office door was ajar too. That meant she had to check even that far. This patrol was going to take her all day.
Though, having an actual trained human do this instead of having those terrible creatures wandering about was much better, because those things were creepy and sucked the joy out of every room, and really, did Hogwarts honestly need that?
Finally having inspected the classroom itself, she made her way to the office door, and poked her head in, finding it was not empty, but there sat in the chair, was well, who she assumed to be the newest victim - ahem - Professor. She knocked on the door, just to make her presence known. Though, if he had any sort of sense and was as good of a Professor as Dumbledore claims him to be, he probably already knew she was there.
Remus didn’t look up when he noticed someone’s presence, he had actually set up a spell on the classroom itself, so he’d know before they even arrived at his office where they looked and where they went in the classroom. Of course, no matter what he wouldn’t know who it was until he saw them. Quite honestly, he was almost hoping it was Sirius Black, but when there was a knock he knew it wasn’t him. His wand hand had dropped from the side of his book but slowly rose when he realized it wasn’t the traitor.
He slowly dropped his book when she knocked and looked at her for a moment. Ah, the ministry official. He had asked Dumbledore about her, and to his surprise, it was a name he recognized. Sending people who were friends with Sirius. Sending relatives of him. Well, weren’t they just so clever? How were they sure they weren’t going to betray them and join Sirius as it was? Of course, Remus would never do that as he killed James and Lily, at least handed them over on a silver platter.
“Nymphadora Tonks. First cousin, once removed to the notorious Sirius Black.” She didn’t look much like her cousin, young, but that he knew. Sirius had talked about his favorite cousin, her mother, fairly often when they were at school and gushed about his cousin having a child when they were thirteen. “My name is Remus Lupin. I’m the new professor, but I’m sure you already guessed that. To what do I owe the pleasure today?” Smiles, that usually was what people seemed to enjoy about him, his soft comforting smiles behind those knowing eyes.

Remus Lupin, something about that name struck a cord. Oh! Well, this is turning out to be quite a reunion. Was this also Dumbledore's plan? To gather anyone still alive who knew him to try and convince him to not do something stupid. Well, when it came to Dumbledore, it kind of made sense.
Tonks crossed her arms in front of her chest, leaning against a nearby bookcase, which in all honesty was not a smart move to do, especially if she moved too quickly from it. She returned his smile, noting that it was very kind and there was a deep wisdom behind his blue eyes. Wait, the hell Tonks? Already noting features? Get a grip.
"Just starting my rounds Professor," she said in a sing-song tone. "After the train, someone figured that actually trained people should probably watch over and not some... creature that decides to attack kids just because they're having a bad day. Dunno why they even sent those things, to begin with, they don't know how to distinguish anyone from anything."
A mischevious glint entered her eyes, "funny though, they'd send one of Sirius' closest friends to work at Hogwarts; you think they'd suspect you to be helpin' him."
That mischievous glint in her eyes made him smile wider, from the soft smile to something more along the lines of joy. It almost reminded him of his days as a Marauder, when his friends would give ideas on the next big prank. Luckily, he was only on the receiving end of their pranks when they wanted to try to outsmart him. Which they never did thanks to his intellect. Quite honestly, that glint was something that reminded him of Sirius as well, but not the bad parts, the parts where they were happy together even if he was faking it the entire time.
Leaning his head against his fingers on a hand and placing his elbow on his desk he examined her with a quick glance. “We were quite lucky I was riding the train that day. Else, who knows what would have happened to some of our students?” He picked up a chocolate bar from his desk and took a small bite from it. He broke off a piece with his free hand. “Chocolate? You’ve got a long patrol ahead of you, it might be best if you had a little snack ready just in case one of those creatures decides to break Dumbledore orders to stay outside.”
Remus sighed thinking about that possibility and then shaking his head. “Dumbledore has the utmost trust in me, no idea why, but I won’t risk that trust for a traitor who killed my friends.” He lifted his head from his fingers and rolled his shoulders slightly. “For a minute there, I was hoping you were him.” That small smile from before returned again instead of the one of joy. “I would like to confront him. After they caught him, they wouldn’t let me see him, not that I asked of course, I knew they would not let me. I want to know why he did it. For everything Sirius Black was, and is, coward was never a word I’d use to describe him.”

She made her way closer to the desk, as he offered the chocolate bar; she took the item with a grin, pocketing it for later. Yes, she probably would need that later; especially if she came across any of those... shudder... creatures. She gave him a greatful smile.
"Who knows, but it's good that someone had the good forethought to have you on that train," she nodded sagely. She didn't know if it had been by choice, or he had been asked to, but regardless. She forwned slightly as he spoke his view on the shole situation. To her, something just didn't sit right. Another reason why she had sort of volunteered to be here. Remus had a point, and it kinda struck at her suspicions as well. It just didn't seem like Sirius to do such a thing. Meaning, he, just the same as she, abhorred the Death Eaters, and such. They were blasted from the Black Family tapestry for Rowling's sake. So why would Sirius fall victim to Voldemort anyways? It just didn't add up.
"I agree. Coward is just not the word for him..." at that, she smiled, deciding to change the subject, seeing that the thoughts had pulled that lively smile from his face. "So, how have you been? Last Sirius told me your stepmother had just had a baby girl?"
Perhaps Dumbledore knew something would happen – because while it was Remus’s decision in the end, Dumbledore had suggested he ride the train and perhaps, remember the old times. Despite the pain those memories brought him, he was still a sentimental old fool and decided to take Dumbledore up on his offer to allow him to ride the train. Most teachers didn’t ride the train as they were already at Hogwarts before the term began, along with the fact they could just apparate to Hogsmeade and walk right in.
“You can thank Dumbledore for nudging me to be there.” He smiles again that wide joyful smile. It honestly made him look, well, his age instead of much older. Even perhaps a little younger than he actually was. It was a nice smile.
He remembered when he was going to school, Horace Slughorn tended to ride on the train with his little band of important people. Not that Remus was ever part of it, probably because of his choice of friends (or he was told by Dumbledore what he was), but he didn’t mind that. Tonks here likely didn’t even know of that. He hadn’t heard of any other teacher riding the train before Slughorn. Even still, he enjoyed the ride and it was a good thing he was there for it.
“Ah yes, Rose Hunter. She’s actually here at Hogwarts – a 16 year old third year even.” He chuckles slightly and folds his hands together. “Ravenclaw, if you’ll believe it. We… talked on the train. We lost touch after she moved to France, and I just hadn’t gotten to talk to her until now.” Mostly true, but also skating over a few facts there Remus. Good job. “I think she might be dating a third year Slytherin. I plan to keep an eye out for him.”

Dumbledore had a funny way of manipulating things to happen, Tonks agree. Teachers didn't normally ride the train. There was a couple of instances, but it was most uncommon. She was sure that his being on the train was part of a plan. She wasn't sure quite what yet. Remus was here, and so was she, some there had to be something in the works here. She then rose her eyes. His sister was a Ravenclaw?
"Well, that's unexpected. Ravenclaw eh," she tried to picture a sibling of his in blue and silver. "For some reason, it kinda fits but it kinda doesn't. Better than Slytherin, yeah?"
But then he mentions she might be possible dating a Slytherin and lets out a snortish laugh, "dating a Slytherin? Please tell me it isn't Draco. It probably isn't, he's got too much of a mouth. What sort of Slytherin would a sister like yours be able to fancy? Aren't they all just pureblood extremists?"
His smile turned into an amused look on his face when she mentioned Draco Malfoy. That boy, from his limited observation, reminded him of Severus Snape if Severus had been popular at school. Of course, Severus suffered from his friends constantly bullying him which isolated him, but Remus had a feeling he would have been similar to Draco if his fellow Slytherins had been his ‘lackeys’ like those two Draco always hung around with – which meant Remus thought there was still good inside of Draco, it was just a matter of drawing it out of him.
“Unfortunately our families aren’t going to be related, unless my sister changes gears. No, the boy’s name is Willow Fey from what I’ve gathered.”
“Well, I’ve done a little bit of digging on the boy – I asked his other professors. Severus was little help and opted to questioning my intentions and reminding me I would need to be impartial to all my students. So I reminded him he needed to also be impartial towards those not in his own house and it just ended… unsatisfactorily.”
His hands moved just a little bit while he talked, laced together, his thumbs moving primarily and a little bit of pointer finger action. Of course, he was worried about his sister and while he would treat her like any other student when it came to class – just like the Slytherin boy – he wanted to make sure she was safe. As a Gryffindor in school he had been wary in general of Slytherins, but he knew they were not all bad – look at Severus. Okay, yes, he wasn’t the best guy in the world and he had figured out one of his own student’s worst fears was him, but he was still making him the wolfsbane potion and that was a big deal to him.
“When I consulted the others, no one seemed to really have anything bad to say about the boy. He’s a driven, intelligent young man who doesn’t seem to possess the supremacist attitude some of his peers subscribe to. A good sign, but I do plan to call him up and… get to know him myself a little bit better. I would rather her heart not be broken by anyone if I can prevent it.”
“She’s extremely idealistic, you see? She… believes the best in people, and believes she can change everyone’s mind about things that were engrained in their heads since they were little.” He chuckles looking down and standing up from his seat behind his desk leaning his hands against it, his body leaning towards Tonks. “Wonderful, if not naïve mindset to have. Dangerous as well.” He gave her a boyish grin and walked around the desk.
“Now I’m sure your patrol is quite lonely. So if you wouldn’t mind some company… I would like to join you. Of course, if you do find Black, two wands are better than one, yes?”

"Sounds like your sister has herself sorted out, from what I'm hearing."
Well, it was much more than what she had at sixteen, Tonks thought to herself. She was going to have to find the girl and have a chat. Shouldn't be too hard to spot, sixteen-year-old third year hanging out with a Slytherin. That in itself stands out. Tonks' smiled softened though. It was really endearing to hear the lengths he'd gone just to find out about the boy - even though it was probably a tad extreme. But from what she gathered, there was probably more to this story than meets the eye.
"Well, she's sixteen. What can you expect? A girl's gonna fall in love with who she's gonna fall in love with."
Though something struck a cord in her with the way he worried and it made her smile. He was actually kinda handsome, what with that soft smile she'd caught a few times now.
"She seems to be on the right track for her goal. She's breaking one of the main social norms of this school to start. I think it might actually be worth watching what she's doing. Not exactly to interfere; cause it sounds like to me she can handle herself pretty well."
His body language has changed, she noted and she found herself becoming red in the face at his proximity. He had a point though. The patrol was lonely. "I wouldn't mind that and that's a very good point. Though, I have the strangest feeling he hasn't actually made it inside the castle... yet."
Trying to feign normality and not be affected that a very handsome man invited himself along, she turned to head back through the office door, "wish there was like, some kinda map that just kept track of people. It would make this so much easier..."
“Well, she’s only sixteen. What can you expect? I’m her older brother. A brother has to protect his little sister.”
He waved his wand to do a little bit of pick up, the book he was reading going back to the shelf along with a few other items he had gotten out, mostly a few papers he’d been reading earlier finding their way to a few notebooks where they belonged. Tucking his wand into his jacket he looked at Tonks for a moment, again amused.
“You said it yourself, she’s sixteen. She might be on track for her goal, but who knows if this young boy is just using her or not. Boys, especially teenage boys, can be cruel. I only wish to understand his intentions, and if nefarious, stop them in their tracks.”
Of course, he had noticed her slight red in her face, but he paid no mind to it – after all, it was probably just a trick of the light. A beautiful young lady like herself likely had no interest in someone as old as he, and as shabby. Of course, he had other ulterior motives than just watching for Black to join her on the patrol, but he was not conscious of them at the time. It seemed natural to call her beautiful in his head, and while she spoke he gained more insight into her mind and so far, she seemed amazing, breathtaking.
“Also potentially dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands,” Remus replied, his smile returning to that of boyish joy following her out of the office. “That would, indeed, be a very… powerful magical object. Unfortunate there isn’t one we can get our hands on.”

She laughed, he really was protective of her. It was cute. She really would have to track down this sister of his, by the end of this walk, she felt as though she would probably know so much about her, it was like she had known her from birth.
"I think you just need to set aside just a taaad of that protectiveness and trust your sister," Tonks nodded sagely. "While I am coming to understand that she is a precious person to you, it won't be good to suffocate her either. She probably listens to you more than you think and it probably still guides her actions, even if they still seem a tad too careless on the outside."
Perhaps she was speaking out of experience, but she sympathized with Rose. Tonks herself had bit of a rebellious side, and it seemed Rose leaned on hers very heavily. "Well, hopefully, I'll come across her, she seems like such a joy. I remember Sirius telling me about how happy you were when she was born."
Regardless of Tonks disagreeing with his course of action he had decided to take, he was still smiling. Quite honestly, he knew that was the logical thing to do – leave it be and let it happen. If he was right, she would learn for herself what he was trying to say. But the pain he had felt when his life completely crumbled around him, he didn’t wish that on anyone. He didn’t want her to feel that pain, the crushing depression that hit him after James and Lily and Peter all died. Just because they were different people didn’t mean the world wasn’t cruel and would crush her too. Everything couldn’t be sunshine and rainbows like she seemed to think. She had an affliction that would make her life harder than anyone else’s and she could not be like everyone else. She could not live a normal life. She gave that up when she saved her mother. He would’ve done the same thing, but she didn’t seem to accept the consequences from his point of view.
“I know that, I just… She’s a little bit too much like myself, I suppose. I just… don’t want her to be hurt.” He looked at Tonks next to him with a sad puppy dog look in his eyes and then held the door from the classroom open for her so they could go out into the corridors together. That was when he noticed he had been walking awfully close to her, and a hand was near her hand, so he scooted away ever so slightly hoping she wouldn’t notice he was almost holding her hand just now.
“I was very excited when she was born. She was adorable and – well everything to me. It feels… like she is still the little girl I remember from back then. Others see her as this… almost adult… person, but she’s still my little sister. She’s still a child to me. Seventeen isn’t an adult – I remember when I was that old and thought I was an adult and I look back on how… naïve I was.” Inadvertently almost insulting Tonks, the 20 year old. Good job Remus.

She remembered vaguely Sirius used to tell her that Remus was always very lonely. Even with him, and their other three friends around. But it somewhat changed when his sister was born. Tonks smiled softly, as she could see the deep care and love he held for her. So close to his heart and it kinda gave her a warm tingly feeling in her chest. She shook her head, deciding to lighten the mood, "you sound more like her Mother than her brother though. But she is so very lucky to have you in her life and I get the feeling she loves you just as much as you love her. But she also wants you to trust her as well. She is her own person, has experienced things probably different than you; so you need to remember to consider her feelings and thoughts as well."
"Seventeen isn’t an adult – I remember when I was that old and thought I was an adult and I look back on how… naïve I was." while that was slightly insulting on her part, she understood where it came from.
"This is true, I mean, isn't that why she's with third years instead of the kids her age? Not just from the educational standpoint - but you know Dumbledore, he always has plans and ideas. I feel like that she was put there to give her more time to grow because if she was just thrown in with the others worrying about NEWTS and all that mess, she just... wouldn't be herself?"
He chuckled lightly thinking about it. Honestly, he could see how he was acting like a parent to her when he was most definitely not her father. “Well, I’m sure if I sent a letter to her mother, she would agree with me. Regardless, I was seventeen when she was born. She’s as close to a child as I’ll ever get.” He sighs and looks at the ground as the two walked down the corridors, the echoes of their feet the only things sounding through the quiet castle.
“I’ve been told I’m a fairly good judge of character when I want to be. Apparently, that was part of the reason Dumbledore wanted me here this year. I don’t understand Dumbledore sometimes, but...” He looked up at the ceiling for a moment and then out the window at the waning moon and the stars around it. “She transferred here three years ago, when Harry Potter came to Hogwarts the first time. From what I was told it was because the curriculum was ‘different’, which I can understand as well. I don’t think that’s what it is, why Dumbledore conveniently placed her in the same year as Harry.” He shook his head, taking in a deep breath and actually laughing. He stopped walking for a moment to laugh to himself, not loudly but not softly either.
“I apologize, I –“ He ran a hand through his hair and smiled, “Here we are walking through the castle at night, the moon out, the stars in the sky searching for a mass murderer, and yet, we’re talking about my little sister’s love life. It’s a bit ridiculous, don’t you think?” It was beautiful, almost a romantic setting with a beautiful lady, and he was talking about his sister seeming to enjoy the presence of another guy, whom he didn't even know was even interested in her.
