Annabel Lee was too worked up at the time to even remember what the sorting hat was saying, other than it saying something about her intelligence and ambition and mentioning her family's long Hufflepuff lineage. Then, suddenly, she heard the hat exclaim, quite loudly, that she belonged in Ravenclaw! What? She hadn't even thought about that as a possibility, being anything other than Hufflepuff like her family as far back as she can remember - and then, as the days passed, she realized there was nowhere else she better belonged. She liked the challenge.

Annabel Lee was born into a solidly-Hufflepuff family, not quite Pureblood due to some generations back someone, somewhere, married a muggle, maybe, possibly, who really knows. To the Hughes, it wasn't an issue. They love Muggle culture and often take vacations into their world just to be awed by it. In fact, by the time Annabel Lee was born just fourteen years ago, her eldest sibling, Helena, had decided to make the muggle world her permanent home, deciding to play music for a living. It was not a decision that the Hughes were happy with, but nothing they could really change. While Helena visits every so often, Annabel Lee has not seen her sister in quite some time, and those who know about the Hughes girl's abandonment often leer about it.
Music is something that Annabel has taken up as well, practicing often with her sister, and even still as she is gone. There's just something about the soft melody of a ukulele that strikes a chord within her. It's calming. She's even been known to write her own songs once she gets into the groove of it and isn't quite so busy at Hogwarts.
Life hasn't necessarily been difficult for Annabel Lee. Honestly, the worst thing that has happened was her sister Helena leaving. She was definitely closest to her eldest sibling, and can't quite understand why she would entirely leave the world of magic, but she respects her decision...sort of. The truth is, she's not so close to the rest of her family. It's not that they don't get along, or they're mean to each other, or anything. Annabel Lee had a true friend in Helena, while with the rest of her family...they just seem there. You have to love them because they're family, and it's great to have someone to fall back on when you need them. But she's never really had the sorts of conversations with them that she's had with her sister. Even her twin brother, Bran, seems just out of reach.
Of course, it doesn't help that in a family of solidly Hufflepuff--seriously, going back generations here--Annabel Lee Hughes just had to get placed into Ravenclaw. Like, what gives? How come she has to be the one to break that tradition? It's a little awkward at family dinners when everyone is home, when they get to talking about their school year at Hogwarts...and Annabel just can't relate to a lot of their reminsicing.
However, while Annabel Lee would have never thought of a life where she wasn't in Hufflepuff, she's come to realize the best place for her is definitely in Ravenclaw, and the sorting hat saw that. Sure, it took some time...weeks...months maybe. But she grew to love where she was and what it brought to her.
